A rotten egg smell is a horrible and foul odor that can make your car inhabitable. If you have that smell in your car, it could be a sign of a severe underlying issue. The smell is usually from hydrogen sulfide, or sulfur, within the fuel. The following are some things that can cause your car to smell like rotten eggs: Broken Catalytic Converter The foremost reason why you have a rotten egg smell in your car is that you have a broken catalytic convertor. The converter is responsible for transforming the hydrogen sulfide or sulfur in your vehicle into sulfur dioxide, which is a colorless gas. The converter changes exhaust gasses into harmful odorless gasses if they enter the car's interior. When the catalytic converter is broken, it cannot function properly hence the smell of rotten eggs.
